چکیده

Fast growing hybrid poplar trees are being plantation grown in the Pacific northwest of the United States and British Columbia for the production of chips for pulp. If allowed to grow somewhat longer (to a rotation age of 9-10 years) and achieve saw log size, the basal log(s) might be used to produce lumber for solid wood products with the remaining stem volume chipped. Solid wood product manufacture would likely result in value added to the raw material. This study estimated lumber recovery rates from hybrid poplar logs, determined certain important manufacturing characteristics of this lumber (machinability, fastening, laminating, finishing and strength) and examined some of the possible products that could be made from this wood. Recovery of usable dry lumber from hybrid poplar logs varied from 42% of log volume for small 7"-9" diameter logs to 54% for large 11" plus diameter logs. Recovery rates would presumably be higher yet for larger log sizes. The wood was comparable to other low to moderate density woods for machinability, fastening, laminating and finishing characteristics and would be well suited for products not requiring high strength, surface hardness or exterior applications. Items successfully produced included: a desk, bookcases, tongue and groove paneling, trim moldings and thin walled decorative boxes for high value foods, wine, and clothing. This work was conducted in Vernon by British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Research Branch staff.

Impact of RAV1-engineering on poplar biomass production: a short-rotation coppice field trial

BACKGROUND Early branching or syllepsis has been positively correlated with high biomass yields in short-rotation coppice (SRC) poplar plantations, which could represent an important lignocellulosic feedstock for the production of second-generation bioenergy. In prior work, we generated hybrid poplars overexpressing the chestnut gene RELATED TO ABI3/VP1 1 (CsRAV1), which featured c. 80% more sy...

Can we use short rotation coppice poplar for sugar based biorefinery feedstock? Bioconversion of 2-year-old poplar grown as short rotation coppice

BACKGROUND Feedstock cost is a substantial barrier to the commercialization of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Poplar grown using a short rotation coppice (SRC) system has the potential to provide a low-cost feedstock and economically viable sugar yields for fuels and chemicals production. In the coppice management regime, poplars are harvested after 2 years' growth to develop the root system an...

Sucrose phosphate synthase expression influences poplar phenology.

The objective of this study was to manipulate the intracellular pools of sucrose, and investigate its role in regulating plant growth, phenology (leaf senescence and bud break) and fibre development. This objective was achieved by differentially expressing an Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana L. Heynh.) sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) gene in hybrid poplar (Populus alba L.xPopulus grandidentat...

Chemical responses to modified lignin composition in tension wood of hybrid poplar (Populus tremula x Populus alba).

The effect of altering the expression level of the F5H gene was investigated in three wood tissues (normal, opposite and tension wood) in 1-year-old hybrid poplar clone 717 (Populus tremula × Populus alba L.), containing the F5H gene under the control of the C4H promoter. Elevated expression of the F5H gene in poplar has been previously reported to increase the percent syringyl content of ligni...

بررسی مقایسه ای جنگل کاری های چنار و کبوده در مجاورت سد زاینده رود اصفهان

This research was conducted to measure quantitative and qualitative characteristics of trees and to determine amount of annual increment for poplar and plane, specially their volume and wood production beside Zayanderud dam. Two plantation areas with 3×3 meters spacing were selected for sampling after field survey. A 30-years-old poplar and a 30-years-old plane stand. In each stand, five tree l...
